Overview

Housed in the Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, the LGBTQ Studies Minor is an 18-credit minor that offers students interdisciplinary approaches to study the critical, social, historical, pedagogical, theoretical, and methodological issues that shape and impact the lives of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two Spirit, and Gender Non-conforming people and their communities. The LGBTQ Studies Minor draws upon Women of Color Feminisms to examine and expand concepts of gender justice while it draws upon Queer and Trans of Color Studies to offer students intersectional approaches to study critical theories of sexuality, gender identity and expression and practices of survival and world-making. Through these interdisciplinary frameworks, students examine the various structures of oppression and systemic inequities that LGBTQ+ people experience in multiple contexts– from home and community to schools, medical and public health industries, and employment. Students will also examine the ways that LGBTQ+ people and communities create spaces where they can survive, thrive, and enjoy their queer lives.
