Overview
The teaching credential with a specific content area authorization in Single Subject Instruction qualifies holders to teach in their authorized field at any grade level, preschool, kindergarten, and grades 1 through 12, or in classes organized primarily for adults.
The Single Subject Preliminary Credential teacher preparation program also includes content for teaching English learners that authorizes the credential holder to provide instruction for English language development and specially designed academic instruction in English within the subject area and grade level authorization of the Single Subject Teaching Credential.
Cal State LA is authorized by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) to offer Single Subject Teaching Credentials in the following subjects:
- Art
- English
- Foundational-Level General Science
- Foundational-Level Mathematics
- Industrial and Technology Education
- World Languages - Languages Other Than English
- Mathematics
- Music
- Physical Education
- Science: Biological Sciences
- Science: Chemistry
- Science: Geosciences
- Science: Physics
- Social Science
Admissions
Students can earn a Single Subject Teaching Credential as undergraduate students* or as post-baccalaureate (graduate) students.
Undergraduate students earning a bachelor’s degree in any of the above fields who would like to earn a Single Subject Teaching credential concurrently with their bachelor’s degree should read the information below and seek advice about the integrated option in their degree program from advisors in their program and from the College of Education Office for Student Services. A list of Subject Matter advisors for each Single Subject Credential Subject Matter is available.
Post-baccalaureate students who would like to earn a Single Subject Teaching credential in one of the above fields should read the information below and contact the College of Education Office for Student Services for advice.
Note: Undergraduate students are those students whose degrees have not been conferred by the time they commence EDCI 4000 .
Admission Requirements
- COE Credential Admission and Application Fee Payment
- Undergraduate applicants must be at junior standing; post-baccalaureate applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Completion of basic skills requirement.**
- A 2.5 grade point average (GPA) or better in all course work for undergraduate and post-baccalaureate applicants or a 2.75 grade point average (GPA) or better in the last 60 semester or 90 quarter units for undergraduate and post-baccalaureate applicants.
- Official transcripts from every community college, college, or university attended, except Cal State LA. Note: International transcripts must be evaluated by an agency approved by the university.
- Philosophy of Education Statement
- Proof of valid Certificate of Clearance
- Photocopy of negative TB Test
- Two original letters of recommendation
- Interview with program faculty
- Applicants to the single-subject credential need to meet basic skills by the start of student teaching. (https://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/options-bsr)
- Applicants to the single-subject credential program need to also have subject matter proficiency by student teaching.
Note: Students who do not have the basic skills requirement met may be conditionally admitted and be formally admitted upon meeting this requirement.
Re-Admission
Effective January 5, 2015, all applicants for re-admission will be required to complete a re-admission protocol and interview for consideration. Please see College of Education, Office for Student Services website for specific information.
Program Requirements
In order for the university to recommend students to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for a Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential, the following requirements must be completed or passed:
- A bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Basic Skills Requirement (BSR)
- Meet subject-matter competency.
- A cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) card (infant, child, and adult)
- U.S. Constitution requirement or an equivalent.
- All required Teaching Performance Assessments (TPA)
- Credit for the professional education courses listed below with a GPA of 3.0 or better (all courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better).
- All courses for the Single Subject credential must be completed within seven years.
